Alert: State Of Louisiana Announces Extensions For Filing And Paying Certain Louisiana Taxes

Louisiana RIB 20-008 issued by the Louisiana Department of Revenue on March 19, 2020 provides temporary relief for the filing of certain specified Louisiana tax returns and the payment of taxes due with said returns. The taxes covered by the Bulletin include February 2020 sales taxes and certain excise taxes.

February 2020 Sales Tax Return

The February 2020 sales tax return and payment would normally be due no later than March 20, 2020. The filing and payment deadline for the February 2020 sales tax period is extended to May 20, 2020. The Bulletin, which may be accessed by clicking on this link to the Louisiana Department of Revenue, states that LDOR will waive delinquency penalties and not impose any interest associated with the February 2020 return as long as the return is filed and the payment for such return are received by the May 20, 2020 extended due date.

RIB 20-008 states that for purposes of the Bulletin, February 2020 sales tax means and includes the following taxes: General Sales and Use Tax, Direct Marketer Sales Tax, Automobile Rental Excise Tax, Hotel Occupancy Tax, Ernest N. Morial New Orleans Exhibition Hall Authority Food and Beverage Tax, and Ernest N. Morial New Orleans Exhibition Hall Authority Tour and Service Contractor Taxes.

Caution

Taxpayers should note that sales taxes generally are also separately collected by local political subdivisions in Louisiana and that the waiver announced in RIB 20-008 would not apply to similar taxes collected by these local political subdivisions.
